Anahata Katkin is a favorite artist, teacher and entrepreneur. My journey to claiming the artist in me, and to falling in love with mandalas began when I took a mixed media collage class with Anhata creating Symbolic Icons at her Papaya Arts warehouse , in gorgeous, Ashland, Oregon. I adore Anahata’s style, in general, in life, in teaching and in decorating. I love her use of color and the vibe she creates in her work and her work space. Most importantly, I admire how she combines, being a mother with being an artist and entrepreneur. It was a couple of beautiful mandalas on the walls of the Papaya Arts warehouse, created by Anahata and her mother, that inspired me to sign up for my first mandala painting workshop with Paul Heussenstamm.

Paul Heussenstamm, a mentor and brilliant mandala and spiritual artist and teacher, first introduced me to the joy and magic of painting mandalas and sacred art in groups at a workshop in Santa Cruz, California. Paul believes art is a spiritual path. I agree. And, he says, “Art is ecstasy for the feeling oriented soul!” Ah yes, true, true. It is through working with Paul that I discovered the mandala as a deeply rewarding experience and life path.

www.nianow.com
Although, I’ve studied all different types of movement and dance, it wasn’t until rather late in life, the last couple of years, that I discovered and fell in love with NIA. In July 2007, I became a certified White Belt NIA instructor. To quote a quote on NIA’s website, “NIA is movement-medicine for the body and soul.”
Nia simultaneously addresses the body, mind, emotions, and spirit, and puts them on the “same page” using music, movement and personal expression to integrate one’s neurology (including the mind, emotions, and spirit) with one’s outer body, or musculature. To achieve this whole-being integration, Nia addresses the whole person using a comprehensive, holistic exercise approach designed with a combination of nine classic movement forms, three from Martial Arts - T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido - three from the Dance Arts - Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance and three from the Healing Arts - Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais.
